This is the purpose of an acronym – to help people remember the name. There are many world famous acronyms – think of NATO, or in computer terms WWW or HTML; these are phrases that are known to millions of people, yet some will not be able to tell you off pat what they stand for. This doesn't matter, as so long as the acronym is remembered the meaning of it is there.
